Apple May Top 100 Million IPhones by End of 2011, Analyst Says

Apple Inc.’s customer base for the iPhone may top 100 million users next year, with demand for the soon-to-be-released iPhone 4 helping to persuade more buyers to embrace the smartphone, Morgan Stanley said.

“We see the iPhone installed base rising from approximately 30 million subscribers at the end of 2009 to over 100 million by the end of 2011,” analyst Katy Hubertysaid in a report yesterday. “Upgrades will emerge as a key demand driver in the coming years.”

Apple said yesterday that it received more than 600,000 preorders for the iPhone 4, a faster, thinner model that will be released in the U.S. and four other countries on June 24. The early orders set a single-day record, exceeding the company’s expectations. AT&T Inc., the exclusive provider of iPhone service in the U.S., said it sold out all the devices it had allocated for preorders.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobsadded features, such as video calling and a sharper screen, to ward off competition from rival phones using Google Inc.’s Android software. The iPhone, which debuted in 2007, has become Apple’s top-selling product, accounting for 40 percentof revenue last quarter.

Demand for the iPhone 4 may also be driven by the fact that 57 percent of iPhone users in the U.S. own an older model that won’t run Apple’s new iOS 4 software, according to Huberty, who is based in New York. That software adds support for new features such as multitasking, the ability to run multiple programs at the same time.

New, lower-priced service plans from AT&T may also help lure buyers, said Huberty, who ratesApple stock “overweight” and doesn’t own the shares.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, rose $4.62 to $271.87 at 4 p.m. New York time in trading. The shares have advanced 29 percent this year.

애플의 아이폰4가 시장에 풀리면 더 많은 구매자를 스마트폰 이용자로 만들 것이며 이에 따라 고객사용자기반이 내년도엔 1억 명에 달할 것이라고 모건스탠리가 말했다.

애널리스트인 케이티휴버트는 어제 보고서를 통해 우리는 아이폰이 2009년부터 2011년 말까지 약 3천만 명이 사용하게 될 것으로 보고 있으며 이러한 업그레이드가 내년에 수요를 늘리는 키 역할을 할 것이라고 말했다.

애플은 어제 더 빠르고 더 가벼운 아이폰4의 사전예약을 60만 건 이상 받았으며 6월 24일에 미국과 다른 4개 국가에 출시할 것이라고 말했다. 이러한 사전예약은 하루 기준으로 최고의 기록이며 회사의 기대를 넘어선 거이다. 미국 내 아이폰 서비스의 공급자인 AT&T는 사전예약자를 위한 기계가 이미 동났다고 말했다.

애플의 CEO인 스티브잡스는 구글사의 안드로이드 소프트웨어를 사용한 라이벌 전화기와의 경쟁을 위해 화상통화와 고화질스크린을 추가했다. 2007년 세상에 나온 아이폰은 지난 분기 이익의 40%를 차지하는 등 애플사에서 가장 잘 팔린 상품이 되었다.

아이폰4에 대한 수요 중 57%는 애플의 IOS4소프트웨어를 사용하지 못하는 구형모델을 사용하는 기존의 유저에 의한 것으로 파악된다고 휴버트는 말했다. 이 소프트웨어는 동시에 복수의 프로그램을 사용하게 하는 멀티테스킹이 가능하다.

AT&T는 더 낮은 가격의 서비스를 계획 중인데 이로 인해 더 많은 구매자를 끌어 모을 것이라고 휴버트는 말했다.

거래소에서 애플의 주가는 오후4시현재 $4.62오른 $271.87달러를 기록 중이며 올해 들어 29%증가했다.
