United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL), the world’s largest airline, is cutting 10 percent of its capacity on U.S.-Japan routes in April and 14 percent in May, citing a “measurable decline” in demand for travel following an earthquake and nuclear disaster.

 

The airline is trimming several midweek flights from airports including New Jersey’s Newark, Los Angeles, Washington Dulles and Seattle in the coming months, Christen David, a spokeswoman for the Chicago-based airline, said today by telephone.

 

United Continental joins Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL)and AMR Corp. (AMR)’s American Airlines in trimming service to Japan in response to a drop in travel after the March 11 earthquake and concerns about radiation leaks at a nuclear plant in Fukushima. Delta suspended flights to Tokyo’s Haneda airport and American said yesterday it would halt two of its six daily Japan flights.

 

United Continental will continue the majority of its normal flights on all routes to Tokyo’s Narita airport, while scrubbing certain round trips on days when bookings are lower, David said.

 

Cancellations in May include 11 round trips from Seattle, three from Los Angeles, six from Dulles and seven from Newark, she said. The carrier is also delaying the start of a second daily seasonal summer flight from San Francisco by about a month, and it will use a smaller Boeing 737-800 instead of a 767-400 on a flight from Guam to Tokyo.

 

United Continental slid 85 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $22.99 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have gained 18 percent in the past year.

세계최대 항공사인 United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL)이 지진과 핵 재난 등으로 여행수요가 감소함에 따라 4월에 미국-일본간 노선운항능력의 10%를 줄이고 5월에는 14%를 축소할 것이라고 밝혔다.

 

대변인인 크리스틴 데이빗은 향후 UAL이 뉴저지의 뉴어크, LA, 워싱턴 덜레스와 시애들을 포함한 공항에서의 몇몇 주간 항공편을 축소할 것이라고 전화를 통해 말했다.

 

UC는 3월 11일 후쿠시마의 지진과 방사능누출에 따른 일본 여행수요 감소로 서비스를 축소하고 있는 델타항공과 AMR의 아메리칸 에어라인에 동참했다. 델타는 도쿄의 하네다 공항으로 가는 노선을 유예하고 있다고 어제 말했는데 일본으로 가는 비행기는 하루6대중 2편이 중단되었다.

 

데이빗은 예약건수가 줄기는 했지만 UC는 도쿄의 나리타 공항으로 가는 모든 노선을 계속해서 운영할 것이라고 말했다.

 

5월의 취소상황은 시애틀의 11개 왕복노선을 포함해 LA에서의 3개 덜레스에서 6개, 뉴어크에서 7개 등이라고 그녀는 말했다. 약 한 달간 여름시즌에만 하루 두 번 뜨는 것도 늦췄고 괌에서 도쿄노선의 비행기도 보잉 767-400에서 더 작은 737-800기종으로 바꾸었다.

UC의 주가는 뉴욕시장에서 오후 4시 현재 85센트(3.6%)하락한 22.99불에 거래되고 있으며 지난 1년간 18%가 상승했다.
