美 경제부처 3인 방, '실업률은 점차 증가할 것'

미국정부의 재무장관, 백악관 예산 담당관 등 경제 3인 방이 하원세출위원회 증언을 위해 준비하는 과정에서 올해 안에 실업률이 줄어들기보단 오히려 점차 상승할 것이라고 말했습니다.

미국의 실업문제나 경제상황이 단기부양으로 해결될 문제가 아니라는 사실은 많은 분들이 알고 있는 상황이지만, 현재의 어려운 경제상황이나 재정상황을 숨기고 쥐꼬리만큼 줄어든 실업률에 열광하는 게 아니라 의도야 어찌되었든 솔직하게 국민 앞에 이야기 하는 상황은 많은 시사를 줍니다.

속으로 곪아가는 가운데 의미 없는 수치개선에 자축중인 우리정부도 좀 더 솔직해질 필요가 있습니다.

  March 16 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. employers won’t hire enough workers this year to lower the jobless ratemuch below the level of 9.7 percent reached in February, three Obama administration economic officials said today.

The percent of Americans who can’t find work is likely to “remain elevated for an extended period,” Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, White House budget director Peter Orszagand Christina Romer, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said in a joint statement. The officials said unemployment may even rise “slightly” over the next few months as discouraged workers start job-hunting again.

“We do not expect further declines in unemployment this year,” the officials said in testimony prepared for the House Appropriations Committee. They predicted the economy would add about 100,000 jobs a month on average -- not enough to bring the jobless rate down substantially.

Geithner, Orszag and Romer reiterated the administration’s forecast that the economy would grow 3 percent this year, as measured by comparing fourth quarter growth in gross domestic product. Growth is projected to rise to 4.3 percent in 2011 and 2012, and inflation probably will remain low, they said.

“The worst now appears to be behind us,” the officials said. “However, the country faces significant and ongoing challenges: high unemployment, the need to build a new and stable foundation for prosperity in the years and decades ahead, and a medium- and long-term fiscal situation that could ultimately undermine future job creation and economic growth.”

오바마 행정부의 세 명의 경제부문 관료들은 오늘 미국의 기업가들이 지난2월 9.7%까지 내려간 실업률을 더 낮추기 위한 충분한 고용을 하지 않고 있다고 말했다.

재무부 장관인 티모시 가이스너와 백악관 예산관인 피터 오재그 그리고 크리스티나 로머는 일자리를 구하지 못한 미국인의 비율이 상당히 높은 채로 유지될 것이라고 오늘 함께 말했다. 당국자들은 실업이 앞으로 수개월간 점차 증가할 것으로 보이며 이로 인해 근로자들이 일자리를 구하는데 다시 절망할 것이라고 말했다.

당국자들은 하원세출위원회에서의 증언을 준비하면서 올해 실업률이 하락할 것이라고 생각하지 않으며 한달 평균 10만개의 일자리는 실업률을 낮출 만큼 충분치 않다고 예상한다고 덧붙였다.

가이스너와 오재그 그리고 로머는 올해 3%의 성장을 예상하는 행정부의 전망을 재확인해 주었다. 성장률은 2011년과 2012년에 4.3%까지 증가할 것으로 예상되며 인플레이션은 낮은 상태가 지속될 것이라고 그들은 말했다.

당국자들은 지금의 최악의 상황은 지나갈 것이지만 미국은 높은 실업이라는 중대하고 지속적인 도전에 직면할 것이고 앞으로의 10년을 위해 미래의 일자리 창출과 경제성장을 해칠 수 있는 중장기 재정상황에 대해 새롭고 안정된 기초를 세워야 할 필요가 있다고 말했다.
