미국의 농축산업이 심각한 가뭄으로 큰 피해를 보고 있습니다. 오늘 미국 농무부는 12개 주 218개 카운티를 이런 재해지역에 포함해 미국 국토의 절반이 넘는 32개 주 1,600개 카운티가 재해지역이 되었습니다.

7월 말 기준 정상적인 옥수수가 전체의 24%에 불과한 것으로 나와 1988년이래 최악의 수확량을 기록할 것으로 보고 있는데, 이는 곧바로 하반기부터 전체 식품 물가를 끌어 올릴 것으로 보입니다.

지난주 농림부는 맥도날드 등 식품회사들이 내년 4% 이상 식품가격을 올릴 것이라고도 발표한 바 있습니다.

저물가 기조를 유지하고 있어 그나마 다행인 미국경제에 식품 물가로 인한 인플레이션 압력이 높아지면 지금의 양적 완화 기조 또한 유지가 어려워질 수 있는데, 이미 곡물에 대한 해외 의존이 절대적인 한국은 말할 것도 없습니다.

이미 높은 상황이지만 최근 상승률이 둔화하고 있어 한숨 돌리고 있는 물가가 곡물가 상승으로 요동칠 게 뻔합니다. 이건 예측이 아니라 팩트이기 때문에 향후 급격한 물가상승에 대비하는 준비도 필요한 상황입니다.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared more than half the counties in the country natural disaster areas as drought sears millions of acres of pasture and cropland.

The USDA today added 218 counties in 12 states throughout the Midwest, Great Plains and South, bringing to almost 1,600 in 32 states the number eligible for government assistance for losses caused mostly by drought. The government also expanded the area of federally subsidized conservation land available for emergency grazing to 3.8 million acres, and said crop-insurance companies have agreed to a short grace period for farmer premium payments.

“The assistance announced today will help U.S. livestock producers dealing with climbing feed prices, critical shortages of hay and deteriorating pasturelands,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. “The Obama administration intends to continue helping those who farm or ranch and live and work in rural America through this period of hardship.”

USDA disaster declarations make farmers and ranchers eligible for low-interest loans to help them weather the drought, wildfires and other disasters. About 24 percent of the nation’s corn crop was in good or excellent condition as of July 29, the worst assessment for this time of year since 1988, according to the USDA.

Lower supplies are boosting costs for food companies from McDonald’s Corp. (MCD) and Coca-Cola Co. (KO) to Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) and Smithfield Foods Inc. (SFD) Food prices may rise as much as 4 percent next year, the USDA said last week.

미국농무부가 가뭄으로 타 들어가는 수백만 에이커의 농지 및 목축지역이 심각해짐에 따라 전체 카운티의 절반이상이 자연재해지역으로 선포되었다

USDA는 오늘 12주의 218개 카운티를 재해지역에 추가함에 따라 중서부와 대초원지대, 남부지역까지 32개 주 1,600카운티가 가뭄으로 인한 피해에 대해 정부지원을 받을 자격을 얻게 되었다. 정부는 또한

연방정부의 보조금을 지원받는 초지의 면적도 380만 에이커까지 확대되었으며 농작물보험회사들도 농부에 대한 특별 요금을 책정키로 했다고 말했다.

오늘 발표된 이러한 지원은 목초지의 가뭄과 건초의 심각한 부족으로 사료가격이 올라가는 축산농가들에 도움이 될 것이며 오바마 정부는 어려움을 겪고 있는 지역의 목장과 농장운영을 지원을 지속적으로 추진할 것이라고 농무부 장관인 Tom Vilsack이 말했다.

미국 농무부의 재해선언은 농장과 목장주들이 가뭄과 자연발화 그리고 다른 자연재해로부터 그들을 돕기 위해 저리 대출을 받을 자격을 제공해 준다. 7월 29일 까지 미국 옥수수 생산의 약 24% 만이 정상적인 컨디션을 보이고 있는데 이것은 1988년 이래 최악의 실적이라고 농무부가 말했다.

공급부족과 가격상승으로 맥도날드와 코카콜라, ADM, SFD등 식품회사들은 식품가격을 내년 4% 이상 올라갈 수 있다고 USDA가 지난주 말했다.
