日후지필름, 美머크 Bio의약부문 인수로 제약산업 본격진출

국내에서 삼성이 바이오 시밀라 투자를 통해 의약품산업에 진출을 결정한 것과 마찬가지로 카메라를 생산하는 일본의 후지필름 홀딩스가 복제생물의약품을 제조하는 바이오 시밀라 산업에 진출코자 세계2위 의약품 제조사인 머크의 계열사들을 약 5억불에 구매하기로 했습니다.
오리지널 의약품개발에서 성공을 거두기란 매우 어렵기 때문에 우리나라 대부분의 제약회사는 대부분 제네릭이라 불리는 복제 약 생산에 주력하고 있습니다.
이에 따라 동일 효능의 싼 의약품을 소비자가 공급받는다는 장점이 있지만 신약개발을 위한 기술개발 없이도 손쉽게 돈을 벌 수 있기 때문에 오리지널의약품을 가진 글로벌 제약사로 거듭나기 어렵다는 단점도 있습니다.
아무튼 인간의 단백질을 기본으로 개발하는 바이오 제약산업은 이미 글로벌 제약사들이 선점하고 있으며,
비 제약사의 경우 기술부족과 위험부담을 피하기 위해 삼성이나 후지필름처럼 바이오 시밀라라 불리는 바이오 복제 약 생산 시장에 진출하고 있는 게 사실입니다.
각 분야의 기업들이 미래 성장을 위해 이업종으로 진출을 서두르는 일이 비일비재하게 일어나게 될 텐데 기업들이 과거처럼 해당영역에 대해 안주해서는 존속하기 점점 어려워 질 수 있습니다.
Fujifilm to Buy Merck's U.S., U.K. Units for Biotech Supplies
Fujifilm Holdings Corp. agreed to buy Merck & Co.’s BioManufacturing Network for making supplies used in clinical studies of biological drugs, a Merck spokesman said in an interview.
The network Fujifilm is acquiring is made up of Merck subsidiaries Diosynth RTP LLC in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and MSD Biologics (U.K.) Ltd. in Billingham, England, Ian McConnell, a spokesman for Whitehouse Station, New Jersey- based Merck, said in a telephone interview today. Toshihiro Matsumoto, a spokesman for Fujifilm, declined to comment.
McConnell declined to give a price for the transaction. Tokyo-based Fujifilm will pay 40 billion yen ($490 million) for the units, Nikkei English News said in a report earlier today, without saying where it got the information.
Fujifilm, the maker of digital cameras and equipment for medical scans, is expanding into drug development with experimental medicines and a joint venture announced last year to create generic biotechnology drugs, known as biosimilars. The units, which Merck obtained through acquisitions, include manufacturing facilities for products used in vaccines and drugs based on human proteins.
Merck’s “commitment to developing biologics and biosimilar products remains unchanged,” McConnell said. The company’s “decision to sell the Merck BioManufacturing Network is part of its ongoing effort to focus on core competencies.”
Merck acquired Diosynth as part of its $49 billion purchase of Schering-Plough Corp. in November 2009, McConnell said. The company bought MSD Biologics the following month.

머크의 대변인은 인터뷰를 통해 후지필름 홀딩스가 머크&코의 제약 계열 중 약품을 만들기 위한 임상 실험 결과를 공급하는 곳을 구매하는데 동의했다고 말했다.
후지필름은 머크의 자회사인 Diosynth RTP LLC와 MSD Biologics을 인수하기로 했다고 대변인인 이안 맥코널이 전화인터뷰를 통해 오늘 밝혔다. 후지필름의 대변인인 토시히로 마츠모토는 이에 대해 자세히 언급하지 않았다.
맥코널은 얼마에 이런 거래가 이루어졌는지 밝히지 않았지만 오늘아침 니케이 영자뉴스에는 확인되지 않은 소식통을 인용해 후지필름이 이번 거래를 통해 400억엔(4.9억불)을 지불할 것이라고 말했다.
디지털 카메라와 의학스캔장비를 생산하는 후지필름은 실험적인 의약품 개발을 통한 제약사업으로 영역을 확장하고 조인트 벤처는 지난해 바이오 시밀라라고 불리는 바이오 테크널러지 복제 의약품을 개발 할 것이라고 선언했다. 이번 인수에 백신과 인간의 단백질을 기본으로 한 의약품의 생산시설을 포함하고 있다.
맥코널은 생물의약품의 발전과 바이오 복제 약 생산에 대한 머크의 입장은 변함이 없으며, 이번 머크의 의약품제조 네트웍 중 일부를 매각한 결정은 핵심분야에 집중하기 위한 것이라고 그는 말했다.
머크는 지난 2009년 11월에 Schering-Plough Corp을 490억불에 인수하면서 그 계열사인 Diosynth사도 얻게 되었으며 그 다음달에 MSD Biologics도 매입하였다고 그는 말했다.
