Japan Swings to Trade Deficit as Europe Drags Down Exports

i7OliZxhXAk8Japan reported a wider-than-expected trade deficit in July as Europe’s sovereign debt crisis and a slowdown in China dragged down exports and higher oil prices boosted imports.

The shortfall was 517.4 billion yen ($6.5 billion), after a revised 60.3 billion yen surplus in June, the Finance Ministry said in Tokyo today. The median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey of 28 analysts was for a 270 billion yen deficit. Exports fell 8.1 percent from a year earlier, compared with an estimated 2.9 percent decline. Imports rose 2.1 percent.

Strength in the yen and weakness in global demand threaten to curb exports over the rest of this year, undermining the economy’s recovery after a contraction in 2011. Japan’s ninth deficit in 12 months underscores the country’s reliance on energy imports after atomic plants were shut down following last year’s earthquake and nuclear disaster.

“It’s unavoidable that Japan’s economic growth will lose steam this quarter,” said Kohei Okazaki, an economist at Nomura Securities Co. in Tokyo. “Global demand is looking stagnant as China’s economy is slowing while the advanced nations’ economies remain weak.”

The yen traded at 79.21 per dollar as of 9:02 a.m. in Tokyo, up more than 5 percent since mid-March. A stronger currency erodes export sales and profits. Today’s level compares with a post-World War II high of 75.35 in October.

Shipments to the European Union fell 25 percent in July from a year earlier, the biggest decline since October 2009, while those to China slipped 12 percent, the ministry said.

Struggle for Momentum

Japan’s gross domestic product advanced an annualized 1.4 percent in the three months through June, down from 5.5 percent in the first quarter.

“Japan has been struggling to regain export momentum as the global economy cools,” Junko Nishioka, chief economist at RBS Securities Japan Ltd. in Tokyo and a former central bank official, said before the report. “The trade deficit is likely to remain for the time being.”

Sony Corp. (6758), Japan’s biggest consumer electronics exporter, cut its full-year profit forecast on Aug. 2. Sharp Corp., the nation’s largest maker of liquid-crystal display panels, announced the same day it would eliminate 5,000 jobs worldwide in its first job cuts since 1950.

Japan has augmented its energy requirements through increased imports after shutting nuclear reactors for safety tests after last year’s meltdown in Fukushima.

“It’s totally unrealistic to expect a swift recovery in nuclear plant operations,” Masaaki Kanno, chief economist at JPMorgan Securities Japan Co. in Tokyo, said before the report. “We should assume an elevated level of energy imports.”

Struggle for Momentum

Asian Stocks Drop as China Slowdown Weighs on Outlook for Global Economy

Asian stocks fell, with the benchmark index headed for the first loss in three days, as Chinese exports grew at a slower pace than economists forecast, overshadowing a rebound in Japan’s machinery orders and better- than-expected U.S. jobs data.

China Overseas Land & Investment Ltd., a state-owned builder, fell 1 percent in Hong Kong. Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea’s No. 1 consumer electronics exporter, dropped 1.1 percent in Seoul after Apple Inc. claimed the company violated a court order in a patent-infringement case. It was the biggest drag on the MSCI Asia Pacific Index. Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. (6305), a maker of bulldozers and cranes, rose 1.7 percent in Tokyo.

China’s export data was a “very poor number, and together with lower-than-expected retail growth, China’s government needs to do something to beef up the economy,” said Alex Au, Hong Kong-based managing director of Richland Capital Management Ltd., which oversees $300 million. “Overall, the worry about a global economic slowdown is not as bad as before as data from the U.S. is showing signs of improvement.”

China’s retail sales rose 14.7 percent in January and February from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said on March 9, missing the 17.6 percent median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey of economists.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 0.3 percent to 126.47 as of 11:36 a.m. in Tokyo, with about five stocks declining for every three that advanced. All but two of 10 industry groups in the measure dropped.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 Stock Average (NKY) rose 0.3 percent after the nation’s machinery orders rebounded in January, signaling company investment will help to drive a return to growth.

Rail Collapse

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index retreated 0.6 percent as railway stocks plunged after a report a high-speed railway in China collapsed. The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks the bigger of China’s stock exchanges, slid 0.3 percent.

China posted its largest trade deficit since at least 1989 last month as Europe’s sovereign-debt turmoil damped exports and imports rebounded after a week-long holiday. The shortfall was $31.5 billion, the customs bureau said on March 10.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index slipped 0.3 percent, while South Korea’s Kospi Index dropped 0.7 percent.

Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 0.3 percent today. The index rose 0.4 percent in New York on March 9 after a 227,000 increase in payrolls last month topped the median projection of economists in a Bloomberg News survey. The jobless rate held at 8.3 percent.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index gained 11 percent this year through last week as the U.S. economy showed signs of recovery and China began to ease its monetary policy. The gain compares with a 9 percent advance by the S&P 500 and an 8.6 percent increase by the Stoxx Europe 600 Index. Stocks in the Asian benchmark are valued at 14.8 times estimated earnings on average, compared with 13.1 times for the S&P 500 and 11 times for the Stoxx 600.

Morgan Stanley, UBS May Be Cut by Moody’s

UBS AG (UBSN), Credit Suisse Group AG (CSGN) and Morgan Stanley (MS)’s ratings may be lowered by as many as three levels by Moody’s Investors Service, which is reviewing banks and securities firms with global capital markets operations.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS), Deutsche Bank AG (DBK), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) and Citigroup Inc. (C) are among companies that may be downgraded by two grades, Moody’s said in a statement, adding that the “guidance is indicative only.”

Credit-rating downgrades can raise a company’s borrowing costs, and for securities firms they can also affect business by obliging them to provide more collateral on trades. Banks worldwide are facing risks stemming from higher funding costs, investor confidence roiled by Europe’s sovereign debt woes, and increased regulation following the 2008 global financial crisis.

“Capital markets firms are confronting evolving challenges, such as more fragile funding conditions, wider credit spreads, increased regulatory burdens and more difficult operating conditions,” Moody’s said. “These difficulties, together with inherent vulnerabilities such as confidence- sensitivity, interconnectedness, and opacity of risk, have diminished the longer term profitability and growth prospects of these firms.”

Bank bonds from the U.S. to Europe and Asia have returned 5.8 percent from the end of November through Feb. 13, poised for the biggest three-month gain since the period ended September 2009, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch index data. Traders are pushing the debt higher even as Moody’s says that banks may suffer as financial reform crimps profits and funding costs are increasingly sensitive to investor confidence.

Barclays Plc (BARC), BNP Paribas (BNP) SA, Credit Agricole SA, HSBC Holdings Plc, Macquarie Group Ltd. and Royal Bank of Canada may also be downgraded by two levels, Moody’s said.

Bank of America Corp. (BAC), Nomura Holdings Inc. Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc and Societe Generale SA may be lowered by one grade, it said.
